Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is our privilege and great pleasure to invite you to the fifteenth edition of the Interdisciplinary Symposium Automation in Medical Engineering (AUTOMED 2021), 08. – 09. June 2021. Due to the pandemic situation and the safety of our health, the Symposium will be implemented virtually, organized by the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel. Together, the city of Basel and the canton Basel Countryside host the oldest University of Switzerland. Therefore, Basel has a long history related to medicine. However, this is the first time that we connect the field of robotics with the field of medicine in the Basel area. For this reason, we strongly collaborate with partners from ETH Zurich, partners from industry, as well as hospitals.

AUTOMED 2021 is a key symposium of the Fachausschuss of DGBMT/GMA in VDI/VDE and will provide exclusive insights into current trends of automation in medical engineering and provide a forum for new research results in this field. The interdisciplinary orientation of the event is intended to deepen existing and to create new synergies between technical and medical sciences.

The AUTOMED 2021 is embedded in the first edition of the hybrid Medical Robotics Week (MRW) 2021 - the first week of its kind dedicated to robotics in Basel. Besides AUTOMED 2021, the seventh edition of the International Workshop on New Trends in Medical and Service Robots (MESROB 2021) will take place from 07. – 9. June 2021 virtually. The MESROB 2021 is an established conference of the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM). It will be complemented by hybrid Conference Workshops from 10. – 11. June 2021 which can be joined virtually or on-site at the Old University, located directly at the Rhine.

You are cordially invited to also join the virtual MESROB 2021 as well as the hybrid Conference Workshops. We very much look forward to your participation and to virtually welcoming you with open arms in Basel!

Kind regards on behalf of the AUTOMED 2021 Steering Committee

Prof. Dr Georg Rauter
